What a tan screen is for
Tan is a light warm brown, close to natural paper and untreated wood. It works well as a neutral backdrop when you want something softer than grey but less distracting than a saturated color.
A colour named after a process
Tan is named for tannin, the plant compound used to turn hide into leather, and it described the resulting colour of the leather before it described anything else. The sense of a suntan came afterwards and from the same root. It is a light yellow-brown, darker and more saturated than beige and lighter than brown, produced on screen by red highest, green somewhat lower and blue lowest.
