What a yellow screen is for
Yellow is the brightest color the eye perceives, which makes it useful for high-visibility signage tests and for checking maximum panel brightness. Because it mixes red and green at full strength, it also shows up faults in either channel.
Yellow on a screen is not yellow light
A display has no yellow emitter. It produces yellow by lighting the red and green subpixels together and leaving blue off, and the eye reports that mixture as yellow even though no light of a yellow wavelength is present. A sodium street lamp, by contrast, emits genuinely yellow light at a single narrow wavelength. The two look similar and are physically nothing alike, which is a neat demonstration that colour is a perception rather than a property of light. It also means a yellow screen is a practical way to check that both the red and green channels are working together.
The most visible colour, in the right conditions
Yellow is among the most conspicuous colours in daylight because it sits near the peak of human sensitivity while remaining distinct from most natural backgrounds, which is why it is used for warning signs, taxis and school buses. Its weakness is white: yellow on white has very low contrast and becomes unreadable at any distance, which is why hazard markings pair it with black rather than anything lighter. If you are using a yellow screen as a sign, black text on it works and white text on it does not.
As a warm, bright field
A full yellow screen at high brightness is a strong, warm light source, useful as a fill light with a warmer cast than white gives, and closer to tungsten than to daylight. It is also hard to look at directly for long, for the same reason it is conspicuous. On an OLED panel yellow costs roughly as much power as white minus the blue channel, so it saves a little energy over white and far less than any dark colour.
