White wallpaper
What a white screen is for
A full white screen turns any monitor or phone into a soft, even light source, which is why photographers use it as an improvised fill light. It is also the fastest way to reveal dust, smudges, stuck pixels and any yellow or pink tint in an ageing panel.
A full screen as a light source
A white screen turns any monitor, tablet or phone into a soft, even, diffuse light. The panel is large relative to a face, which is exactly what makes light flattering: the bigger the source relative to the subject, the softer the shadow edges. Photographers use a tablet as a fill light for small products, and it is the cheapest improvement available to anyone on a video call lit only from overhead.
What white reveals that black hides
Black finds pixels that are stuck lit. White finds the opposite: a dead pixel receives no power at all, so it stays black no matter what, and only becomes visible against a bright field. White also exposes dust and smears that vanish on a dark screen, and any colour cast in the panel itself. If a white screen looks faintly yellow, pink or blue, either the colour temperature is set oddly or the backlight has aged unevenly.
Checking uniformity and ageing
Hold a full white screen at arm's length and look at the corners against the centre. Older panels commonly dim at the edges or drift warm in one region, and the difference is much easier to see on a flat white field than on any photograph. This is also how you spot the faint permanent shadow of image retention on a panel that has displayed the same interface for years.
Reading, contrast and eye strain
A full white screen at high brightness in a dark room is a genuinely uncomfortable amount of light, and it is the reason dark mode exists. If you are using white as a light source, keep the room lit too: the strain comes from the contrast between a bright screen and a dark surround rather than from the screen alone.

White color values
The exact values for this shade, if you need to match it somewhere else.
| Hex | #FFFFFF |
|---|---|
| RGB | 255, 255, 255 |
| HSL | 0°, 0%, 100% |
| CMYK | 0%, 0%, 0%, 0% |
| Contrast on white | 1:1 |
| Contrast on black | 21:1 |
Contrast ratios follow the WCAG formula. Anything at or above 4.5:1 is readable as body text against that background, and 3:1 is the floor for large headings. White reaches that bar on black.
Colors close to white
Measured as perceived difference, not by name, so these are the shades that genuinely sit nearest white to the eye.
Questions
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. On mobile the page fills the screen when you tap the panel. Some browsers keep a thin status bar visible, which is a browser limit rather than something the page controls.
Will a white screen fix a stuck pixel?
Sometimes. A stuck pixel is lit in one color and can occasionally be freed by cycling colors rapidly for a few minutes. A dead pixel receives no power at all and cannot be recovered in software.
What is the hex code for this white screen?
This page uses #FFFFFF. The same value is shown in RGB, HSL and CMYK further down, so you can match this exact shade somewhere else.
Does a white screen save battery?
No, and on an OLED or AMOLED screen a light color costs more power than a dark one, because every pixel has to be lit. If battery life is the goal, use the black screen instead.
Can I download this white as a wallpaper?
Yes. There is a ready-made 1920 by 1080 PNG on this page, and the panel above will generate the same color at your own screen size, at 1440p or 4K, or at phone dimensions. No watermark and no sign-up.
Is it free?
Yes, and there is no sign-up. The page draws a color; that is the whole tool.
