Beige is an off-white with the blue channel pulled down. Some people find it more comfortable than pure white for long viewing, for the same reason warm-tinted paper is easier to read than bright white.

Beige takes its name from undyed, unbleached wool, and it named a state of not having been coloured before it named a colour. That origin is why it carries connotations of plainness and neutrality that no other pale shade quite has, and why it became the default for so much office equipment and computer hardware through the 1980s and 1990s.
