What matrix rain does

Matrix digital rain is the falling column of glowing green characters made famous by the 1999 film, and this draws it across your whole screen with the speed, density and color under your control. People run it as a screensaver, as a backdrop for video calls and streams, as ambient decoration on a spare monitor, and as set dressing whenever something needs to look like a computer doing something dramatic. It runs entirely in your browser with nothing to install.

How to use it

  1. Adjust speed, density and color if you want something other than the classic green.
  2. Click the canvas, or press F, to fill the whole display.
  3. Press Esc to exit. Leave it running as long as you like; it does not stop on its own.

Where the effect comes from

The falling code was created for The Matrix in 1999 as the visual representation of the simulated world, and its designer has said the characters were derived from his wife's Japanese cookbooks, reversed and mixed with numerals. That is why the glyphs read as half-familiar: mostly katakana, flipped, with digits and a few Latin letters among them. The look has long since escaped the film and become general shorthand for code doing something, which is why it turns up in stock footage, music videos and product demos far more often than the film itself is referenced.

What the animation is actually doing

Each column drops one character at a time. The newest character in a column is drawn brightest, often close to white, and the ones above it fade toward dark green as they age, which produces the sense of a glowing head with a trail behind it. Columns run at different speeds and restart at random, so no repeating pattern is visible. It is drawn on an HTML canvas, which is why it stays smooth full screen: the whole frame is repainted each tick rather than the browser laying out thousands of individual elements.

Using it as a backdrop

For video calls and streams, run it full screen on a second display behind you, or capture it as a browser source in software such as OBS. Two practical notes. Dial the speed down: motion that reads well when you are looking straight at it is distracting behind a talking person, and heavy movement also costs a video codec bandwidth, which can soften the picture of your face. And be aware that a bright green screen filling the background can confuse a virtual background or chroma key, since that is close to the color those systems key out.

Battery, heat and leaving it running

This is a continuously animating canvas, so it keeps the processor and graphics awake and will drain a laptop or phone battery noticeably faster than a static page. On a plugged-in desktop that is irrelevant; on a phone left running all evening it is not. Lower density and slower speed both reduce the work per frame. It also prevents the display sleeping while it is in full screen, which is useful if you want it as ambient decoration and worth knowing if you do not.

What is the Matrix code made of?

Mostly mirrored Japanese katakana characters, mixed with numerals and a few Latin letters. The film's designer has said the glyphs came from his wife's Japanese cookbooks, reversed. They do not spell anything.

Is it free, and do I need to install anything?

It is free and there is nothing to install. It runs in your browser as a web page, so it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

Can I use it as a screensaver?

Yes, in practice: put it full screen and leave it. It also holds the display awake while full screen, so the system screensaver will not interrupt it. It is not a true screensaver installed into the operating system.

Can I use it as a video call or stream background?

Yes. Run it full screen on a second display, or add it as a browser source in OBS. Slow it down if it will sit behind you, and note that heavy green can confuse virtual background and chroma key features.

Will it drain my battery?

More than a static page, yes, because it animates continuously and keeps the processor and GPU busy. Reducing speed and density lowers the load.

Can I change the color?

Yes. Green is the default because it is what the film used, but any color works, and the same falling-column effect in amber reads as an older monochrome terminal.
