What wallpaper generator does
This makes a solid color wallpaper: a plain image of one color, at whatever pixel dimensions you ask for, downloaded as a PNG. There is no pattern, no gradient and no watermark. People use them because a flat background leaves the icons and widgets as the only thing on screen, because a true black one saves power on an OLED phone, and because matching a desktop to a specific brand or accent color is otherwise surprisingly hard to do for free.
How to use it
- Pick the color, either from the swatches or by entering a hex code.
- Choose a size. "Your screen" uses your current resolution, or pick a preset such as 1080p, 1440p, 4K or a phone size.
- Click Download PNG. The file is generated in your browser and saved straight to your device.
About wallpaper generator
Which size to choose
Match the pixel dimensions of the display, not its physical size. A standard desktop monitor is usually 1920 by 1080, a QHD one 2560 by 1440, and a 4K one 3840 by 2160. Phones are taller than they are wide and vary widely; 1170 by 2532 covers a common iPhone, and many Android devices sit around 1080 by 2400. Getting this exactly right matters less for a solid color than for a photograph, since there is no detail to stretch or crop, but an image smaller than the screen can still be scaled up and softened by the operating system.
Why a solid color instead of a photograph
Legibility, mostly. Icons, folder names and widget text have to stay readable against whatever is behind them, and a photograph provides a different background under every icon. A flat color guarantees consistent contrast everywhere. It also removes the visual noise that makes a busy desktop feel cluttered, which is why plain backgrounds are common among people who keep a lot of windows open.
True black and OLED battery life
On an OLED or AMOLED display each pixel produces its own light, so a black pixel is simply switched off and draws essentially no power. A pure black wallpaper on such a phone measurably extends battery life, and the effect is strongest with a dark system theme so more of the screen stays off. On a normal LCD the backlight runs at the same brightness regardless of what is displayed, so a black wallpaper saves nothing there. Check which panel your device has before expecting a difference.
PNG rather than JPEG, and why it matters here
PNG stores color losslessly, so a flat area is exactly the value you asked for. JPEG is lossy and works by discarding detail your eye is unlikely to miss, which introduces faint blotches and banding into large flat areas: the precise case a solid color wallpaper is made of. A single-color PNG also compresses extremely well, so the file is small despite being lossless, often only a few kilobytes.
Setting it as your background
On Windows, right-click the saved file and choose "Set as desktop background", or open Settings then Personalisation then Background. On macOS, right-click and choose "Set Desktop Picture", or add the file under System Settings then Wallpaper. On iPhone, save the image to Photos, open it, tap the share icon and choose "Use as Wallpaper". On Android, open the image in Photos or Gallery and choose "Use as" or "Set as wallpaper". If the result looks softened or cropped, the image was smaller than the screen; generate it again at the exact resolution.
Questions
Is the wallpaper free to use?
Yes, with no watermark, no sign-up and no attribution required. A single flat color is not a creative work anyone can own, so there is nothing to license. Use it personally or commercially.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The PNG is drawn by your own browser using a canvas and saved directly to your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, which is also why it works instantly and offline once the page has loaded.
What size should a phone wallpaper be?
Match your phone's screen resolution in pixels. A common iPhone size is 1170 by 2532 and many Android phones are around 1080 by 2400. If you are unsure, choose the "Your screen" preset, which reads your current resolution.
Will a black wallpaper save battery?
On an OLED or AMOLED screen, yes, because black pixels are switched off rather than lit. On an LCD the backlight stays on regardless, so the saving is negligible.
Why PNG and not JPEG?
JPEG compression introduces faint banding and blotches into large flat areas, which is exactly what a solid color image is. PNG is lossless, so the color stays exact, and a one-color PNG still compresses to a very small file.
