What a black screen is for
Pure black is the standard backdrop for spotting dead or stuck pixels, checking for backlight bleed on an LCD, and cleaning a screen without smearing what you cannot see. On OLED and AMOLED panels a black screen also draws almost no power, because black pixels are switched off rather than lit.
Why black is the standard test field
Manufacturers and reviewers reach for a full black frame first because faults that hide in normal content become obvious against it. A stuck pixel locked on red, green or blue is invisible in a photograph and unmissable on black. Backlight bleed, where light escapes around an imperfect panel seal, only shows as pale clouding in the corners when the rest of the screen is genuinely dark. Black on OLED versus black on LCD
The two panel types treat black completely differently. An OLED lights each pixel individually, so a black pixel is simply switched off: it emits nothing, draws almost no power, and produces true black. An LCD has a backlight burning behind a filter layer, so black is the filter blocking as much light as it can, which is never all of it. That is why an OLED phone gains real battery life from dark mode while a laptop with an LCD gains almost none, and why a black screen in a dark room looks like a void on one and faintly grey on the other.
Using it to clean a monitor
Dust and fingerprints are nearly invisible against a bright desktop and obvious against black, so a black screen is the practical first step before you touch a cloth to the panel. Follow it with white, which reveals the darker marks black conceals. Switch the display off before applying any liquid, and use a dry microfibre cloth on the panel itself rather than spraying it directly.
As a backdrop and a pause button
A black screen is the fastest way to blank a projector mid-presentation without hunting for the remote, and it holds a display awake while showing nothing, so no screensaver or lock screen interrupts.
