What uniformity test does

A uniformity test asks a different question from a pixel test. A pixel test asks whether individual pixels work; this asks whether the panel is evenly lit across its whole area. The faults it finds are backlight bleed at the edges, blotchy patches known as mura, corner dimming, and a colour cast that varies across the screen. These show best at low and middle brightness levels rather than at pure black or pure white, which is why this steps through seven levels weighted toward the dark end.

How to use it

  1. Turn the room lights off. Uniformity problems are invisible in a lit room.
  2. Set the display to the brightness you normally use, not maximum.
  3. Go full screen and step through the levels, starting at black.
  4. Turn on the nine-zone grid to compare regions rather than judging an overall impression.
  5. Look from one fixed position, centred and square to the screen, since moving changes what you see.

Why the dark levels matter most

Pure black tells you about bleed and nothing else, and on an OLED it tells you nothing at all, because every pixel is simply off. Pure white hides unevenness, since everything is driven to maximum and differences get clipped away. The interesting range is between: four per cent grey shows bleed while the panel is actually driving pixels, ten to twenty per cent is where banding and mura appear, and fifty per cent is the single most revealing level for overall uniformity. That is why the levels here are weighted toward the dark end rather than spread evenly.

Bleed, glow, clouding and mura are four different things

These get used interchangeably and are not the same. Backlight bleed is light leaking around an imperfect panel seal, usually at the edges and corners, and it stays in place when you move your head. IPS glow is a lightening or purple cast in the corners that shifts as you move, and it is inherent to the panel type rather than a defect. Clouding is patchy unevenness across the middle of the screen, often from uneven pressure during assembly. Mura is fine-grained blotchiness visible on mid greys, from small variations between pixels. Only the first and the last are usually grounds for a return.

The nine-zone grid, and how uniformity is actually measured

Manufacturers and reviewers do not judge uniformity by looking. They measure luminance at nine points, a three by three grid across the panel, and quote the deviation between them, because the eye is very poor at detecting a slow gradient across a large area. You can be looking at a screen that is fifteen per cent dimmer in one corner and simply not notice. Turning on the grid here forces the same comparison: look at each zone against its neighbours rather than at the screen as a whole.

Why your panel looks worse in review photographs

Comparing what you see against images online will make almost any display look defective. A camera on a long exposure accumulates light over time and renders faint bleed as a bright glow, and photographs are usually taken at maximum brightness in complete darkness, which is nobody's normal viewing condition. The honest test is whether you can see it while actually using the screen at your normal brightness. If you cannot, it does not matter, whatever a photograph suggests.

What is worth returning a screen over

Faint, even clouding at the corners is normal on edge-lit LCDs and is not worth pursuing. A bright patch, a distinct streak, or bleed visible during ordinary use is worth acting on. Uniformity is also one of the areas where panel lottery is real: two units of the same model can differ noticeably, so an exchange is often more productive than a repair. As always, a retailer return window is easier to use than a warranty claim, so check on the day it arrives.

What is backlight bleed?

Light escaping around an imperfect seal at the edge of an LCD panel, visible as pale clouding at the edges and corners on a dark screen in a dark room. It is a characteristic of edge-lit LCDs. OLED panels have no backlight and therefore none of it.

What is the difference between IPS glow and backlight bleed?

IPS glow shifts and changes as you move your head and is normal for the panel type. Backlight bleed stays in the same place regardless of viewing angle and is a manufacturing fault. Move your head: if it moves, it is glow.

How do I test screen uniformity?

In a dark room at your normal brightness, display a series of grey levels full screen, especially the dark ones, and compare regions of the screen against each other. Use the nine-zone grid rather than judging the panel as a whole, since the eye misses slow gradients.

Is uneven brightness normal?

Some is, on almost every LCD. Small variation across a large panel is expected and manufacturers specify tolerances rather than perfection. A visible patch, a streak, or something you notice during ordinary use is not normal.

Why does my screen look worse than reviews suggest it should?

It is usually the reverse: review photographs exaggerate bleed badly, because a long camera exposure accumulates faint light into a bright glow. Judge your panel at your own brightness in your own room, not against a photograph.

Can uniformity problems be fixed?

No. Bleed and mura are physical characteristics of the assembled panel and no software or setting changes them. If it is bad enough to matter, the remedy is an exchange or a return rather than a fix.
