What a silver screen is for
Silver is a light grey, bright enough to work as a soft light but without the harshness of full white. It is often the better choice when checking uniformity on a very bright panel.
Silver and grey are the same value
Flat silver and light grey are, on a screen, indistinguishable. Both are all three subpixels at roughly equal moderate-to-high output. Everything that separates silver from grey in the physical world is reflection: the mirror-like return of light that makes a silver surface show its surroundings and shift as you move. A static image cannot carry that, which is why silver text and silver logos in print use metallic ink or foil, and why silver on a screen is always a suggestion rather than the thing itself.
Why silver looks white and gold does not
Most metals reflect nearly all visible wavelengths more or less equally, so they take their colour from whatever is around them and read as neutral. Silver is the most reflective of all across the visible spectrum, which is why it looks so bright. Gold and copper are the exceptions that prove the rule: both absorb part of the blue end and so carry a colour of their own. That is the physical reason silver, aluminium, steel and chrome all look broadly alike while gold looks unmistakably different.
A light neutral field, and what it is good for
As a flat colour, silver is a light neutral, and light neutrals are useful for the same reason white is: they reveal dust, smudges and any colour cast in the panel, while being less punishing to look at than full white. If a silver field looks faintly warm or faintly blue rather than neutral, that tint is the display rather than the colour, which makes it a practical everyday check on an ageing monitor.
