What screen info does

This reads what your browser knows about your display and shows it in one place: the physical resolution in pixels, the resolution a web page sees, the ratio between them, the aspect ratio, colour depth and gamut, touch capability and the graphics hardware. Everything is read locally and nothing is sent anywhere. The most useful number for most people is the first one, which is the resolution to use when generating a wallpaper.

How to use it

  1. Read the headline figure. That is your physical screen resolution in pixels.
  2. Compare it against the CSS resolution below, which is what a web page actually works in.
  3. Use Copy all if you need to paste the details into a support ticket or a forum post.
  4. Take the resolution to the wallpaper generator if you want a background at exactly that size.

Why two different resolutions are shown

On a high-density display these disagree, and the difference confuses people constantly. The physical resolution is the actual number of pixels in the panel. The CSS resolution is what a web page is given to work with, deliberately smaller so that text and interfaces are a usable physical size rather than microscopic. The ratio between them is the device pixel ratio: a value of 2 means every CSS pixel is drawn using a 2 by 2 block of real pixels. A modern laptop reporting 1512 by 982 to a web page may well have a 3024 by 1964 panel.

Which number to use for a wallpaper

The physical one, always. A wallpaper generated at the CSS resolution on a high-density display will be scaled up by the operating system and look soft. This is the single most common reason a downloaded background looks worse than expected, and it is why the wallpaper generator on this site offers a preset that reads your real resolution rather than asking you to guess.

Colour depth and colour gamut are different things

Depth is how many distinct values each pixel can take: 24-bit means eight bits per channel, which is around 16.7 million colours. Gamut is the range of real-world colours the panel can physically produce, and it is the more meaningful figure for anything visual. An sRGB panel covers the standard web range; a Display P3 panel covers noticeably more, particularly in reds and greens. A wide-gamut display showing sRGB content without proper colour management renders it oversaturated, which is why photographs sometimes look garish on a new monitor.

Why the graphics row may say nothing

The renderer string names the graphics hardware, and some browsers deliberately hide or generalise it. That is a privacy measure: the combination of GPU, screen dimensions, fonts and other details forms a fingerprint that can identify a browser across sites without any cookie. Firefox and Safari both restrict this to varying degrees. A hidden value is a browser working as intended rather than a fault.

What these numbers cannot tell you

Everything here is what the browser reports, and a browser can be wrong or deliberately vague. Physical screen size in inches is not exposed at all, so pixel density in PPI cannot be calculated from a web page. Refresh rate is not exposed either, which is why measuring it needs a separate test. And a browser window scaled by an operating system zoom setting will report figures reflecting that zoom rather than the hardware.

What is my screen resolution?

The headline figure on this page is your physical resolution in pixels, calculated from what your browser reports multiplied by your device pixel ratio. The smaller CSS figure below it is what a web page works in.

What is device pixel ratio?

The number of physical pixels used to draw one CSS pixel. A ratio of 2 means a 2 by 2 block of real pixels per CSS pixel, which is how high-density displays keep text sharp without making everything tiny.

Which resolution should I use for a wallpaper?

The physical one. Generating at the CSS resolution on a high-density screen produces an image the system scales up, which looks soft.

Why does my screen resolution look wrong?

Usually an operating system scaling or zoom setting, which changes what the browser reports. Browser zoom does the same thing. Reset both to 100% for the true figure.

Can this tell me my screen size in inches?

No. Physical dimensions are not exposed to web pages, so pixel density cannot be calculated here either. Only pixel counts are available.

Is any of this sent to a server?

No. Everything is read by your browser and displayed locally. Nothing is transmitted, logged or stored.
