What a blue screen is for
Blue is the second chroma key standard, preferred over green when the subject is wearing green or when you want less color spill on blond hair. It is also the hardest color for most panels to render evenly, so it exposes banding and clouding.
Why blue is the hardest colour to look at
Blue light sits at the short end of the visible spectrum and refracts more strongly than red, so a lens cannot bring both to focus in the same plane. The eye is no exception: pure blue detail lands slightly out of focus on the retina, which is the chromatic aberration that makes fine blue text on a black background look soft and slightly unstable no matter how sharp the screen is. The retina also has far fewer blue-sensitive cones than red or green ones, and almost none in the very centre of vision. Blue is fine for large areas and poor for small detail.
Blue light, sleep, and what is actually established
Light in the blue part of the spectrum is the most effective at suppressing melatonin and shifting the body clock, through a receptor in the retina that is separate from the ones handling vision. That much is well established. What is far less settled is how much the blue emitted by a phone at normal brightness matters compared to simply being awake in a lit room, and studies on night mode features have been mixed. Reducing overall brightness in the evening is better supported than changing colour temperature alone.
Blue on a display, and the blue subpixel
A full blue screen drives only the blue subpixels and is the field on which a dead blue subpixel appears. It is also worth knowing that blue is usually the dimmest of the three: blue emitters are the least efficient, and on OLED panels the blue material degrades fastest, which is a main reason older OLED screens drift warm over their lifetime. If a white screen on an aging panel looks slightly yellow, weakening blue is a large part of the explanation.
