What a indigo screen is for
Indigo is a dark blue-violet with almost no green. Panels that crush dark tones tend to render it as near black, so it is a quick way to see whether your display is holding detail at the bottom of its range or clipping it away.
The colour Newton added, and the argument about it
Indigo appears in the standard list of seven rainbow colours because Newton put it there, and he did so partly on the belief that the spectrum should have seven divisions by analogy with the musical scale. Most people cannot reliably pick indigo out as distinct from blue and violet, and modern treatments of the spectrum frequently drop it. It survives mainly through the mnemonic. That makes it an unusually honest example of how much colour naming is convention rather than measurement.
The dye that made jeans blue
Indigo dye is one of the oldest in use, originally extracted from plants of the genus Indigofera and produced synthetically since the end of the nineteenth century. Its defining property is that it does not penetrate cotton fibre fully, sitting on the surface instead, which is why denim fades at the points that rub and why a pair of jeans wears into a pattern specific to its owner. Almost no other dye behaves that way, and the entire aesthetic of worn denim depends on it.
Indigo on a display
Here indigo is a deep blue with a distinct violet lean: blue high, red low, green near zero. Having almost no green makes it a darker field than its saturation implies, since green carries most of the perceived brightness of a screen. That places it near navy and plum in overall lightness, and it works the same way as a background, taking light text comfortably and dark text not at all.
