What a lime screen is for
Lime pushes green hard while adding red, making it one of the most eye-catching colors a screen can produce. It is a quick way to check whether your panel can hit saturated greens without clipping.
The colour that replaced safety orange
Fluorescent yellow-green has increasingly displaced orange for high-visibility clothing, and the reason is where human sensitivity peaks. The eye is most responsive around 555 nanometres in daylight, which is precisely this yellow-green, so it appears brighter than any other colour at the same physical intensity. It also holds up better at dusk than orange does, because as vision shifts toward rods the peak sensitivity moves toward shorter wavelengths and long-wavelength colours darken first. That is why emergency services in many countries switched.
Lime on a display
Lime is green at full output with red raised substantially and blue near zero. Because green already carries most of the perceived brightness of a screen and red is adding to it, a full lime field is among the brightest a display can produce, and it is genuinely uncomfortable to look at directly at full brightness. As a light source it is unusable for anything involving skin, since it casts everything in a green that no white balance recovers well.
Contrast and legibility
Lime is a light colour despite being saturated, which catches people out. It takes black text well and white text very badly, and lime on white has almost no contrast at all despite the two looking obviously different. That combination of high visibility as an object and poor performance as a text background is the same thing that makes safety clothing work: it is designed to be seen, not to be read from.
