What a green screen is for
Green is the chroma key standard because human skin contains very little of it, so keying it out leaves clean edges. On a second monitor or tablet this gives you a small green backdrop for free. It also isolates green subpixel faults.
Why green screens, and not blue ones
Green became the chroma key standard for a reason rooted in hardware. Most camera sensors use a Bayer filter with twice as many green photosites as red or blue, because the eye is most sensitive to green, so the green channel is recorded with the least noise and the most detail. That gives the cleanest edge when the background is keyed out. Green also sits far from human skin tones, which are built mainly from red and some blue, so a person does not partially vanish along with the background. Blue is still used when a subject wears green, which is exactly why weather presenters avoid green ties.
Green looks brighter than it measures
Human vision peaks at around 555 nanometres in daylight, which is green, and everything else falls away from that peak. This is why a full green screen looks considerably brighter than a full red or blue one at the same nominal value, and why green contributes roughly seventy per cent of the perceived brightness of white on a display. It also explains the old monochrome monitors: green phosphor delivered the most apparent brightness for the least power, so terminals were green long before anyone chose it for style.
Using it to check a display
A full green field drives only the green subpixels, so a green subpixel that has failed appears as a dark dot that no other colour will reveal. Because green carries most of the perceived brightness, it is also the most revealing field for uniformity: a panel that dims toward one edge or drifts in one region shows that unevenness more obviously in green than in red or blue. Look at it from straight on, since most LCD panels shift noticeably in colour and brightness when viewed from an angle.
