Ivory is white with the blue channel pulled down very slightly. Many people find it more comfortable than pure white for the same reason warm-tinted paper is easier to read than bright white stock.
Why off-white is easier to read than white
A pure white screen at full brightness in a dim room is an uncomfortable amount of light, and it is the reason dark mode exists. Backing white off slightly toward a warm off-white reduces the total light without meaningfully reducing contrast against dark text, which is why paper-like reading applications and e-readers default to something in this range rather than pure white. The strain comes mainly from the difference between a bright screen and a dark surround, so lighting the room helps at least as much as changing the colour.
What ivory reveals on a panel
