What a sand screen is for
Sand is a pale, desaturated yellow-brown. It is a comfortable neutral backdrop that does not compete with whatever you place in front of it, which is why it is common in photography setups.
Why sand is not one colour
Actual sand ranges from near-white to black depending on what it is made of: quartz gives the familiar pale gold, ground coral and shell give white, volcanic basalt gives black, and iron content gives the reds of desert dunes. The colour named sand is the quartz version, the pale warm one most common on temperate beaches. It is a pale yellow-brown with a touch more depth than beige, produced by all three channels high with blue held down furthest.
Warm neutrals and eye comfort
Pale warm neutrals like this are common as reading backgrounds because they cut the total light of a white screen while keeping ample contrast for dark text, and because the reduced blue means less of the light that most affects the body clock in the evening. The effect is modest and should not be oversold: brightness matters more than tint, and a dim room with a bright screen is harder on the eyes than any choice of background colour.
As a test field
Like the other near-whites, sand is useful for spotting a colour cast, because it sits below maximum on every channel and so has room to show an imbalance that pure white would clip. It is also a fair test of how a panel handles subtle warm tones: a display with aggressive saturation processing pushes sand toward orange, and one running cool renders it grey.
