Coral is a warm pink-orange that sits close to skin tone, which makes it a practical reference when you are judging whether a display renders faces naturally or pushes them red.
Named for an animal, not a plant
Coral is built by colonies of small animals that deposit calcium carbonate skeletons, and the colour named after it is that of certain shallow-water corals. Most of the colour in a living reef comes from algae living inside the coral tissue, which is why bleaching, when the algae are expelled under heat stress, leaves the white skeleton visible. So the colour named coral belongs to a partnership rather than to the animal alone.
A warm mid-light colour
Coral is a pinkish orange: red high, green around half, blue low. That places it between salmon and orange, warmer than the former and softer than the latter. It sits in the upper-middle of the brightness range, which makes it one of the trickier colours for text, since dark text works and light text does not, but neither has a large margin. Check contrast rather than assuming.
As a screen colour
Coral is a three-channel mixture at distinctly different levels, which makes it a reasonable informal test of a panel: a display with a colour cast pushes it toward pink or toward orange, and one with heavy saturation processing renders it as a much more vivid orange than it should be.
