What a ruby screen is for
Ruby is a dark, slightly brown red. Dark saturated reds are where cheaper panels lose detail first, so a full ruby field is a quick way to see whether yours is holding shadow separation.
Chromium again, in a different crystal
Ruby is corundum coloured red by chromium, the same element that turns beryl into emerald. The crystal it sits in determines the colour it produces, which is why the identical impurity gives red in one mineral and green in another. Ruby was also the material of the first working laser, built in 1960: a synthetic ruby rod produced a deep red beam at 694 nanometres, and chromium is what made that possible.
A dark, slightly blue red
The colour named ruby is a deep red with a hint of blue and almost no green, sitting between crimson and maroon in both darkness and coolness. Its saturation stays high while its brightness is low, which is a combination that reads as rich and is relatively rare among screen colours: most colours lose apparent saturation as they darken. That is why deep reds are used where something needs to look expensive rather than urgent.
As a screen field
Ruby takes light text comfortably and dark text not at all. As a test field it is useful for the same reason crimson is: a mixture of a strong channel and a weak one exposes calibration problems that a primary hides, and a display that crushes dark saturated colours will render ruby, crimson and maroon as very nearly the same shade.
